Warm days (15Β°Cβ22Β°C), clear skies. All roads accessible. Perfect for photography and outdoor activities.
Cooler temps (5Β°Cβ15Β°C). Fewer tourists. Lake is still beautiful. Some routes may get tricky.
Roads closed due to snowfall. Temperatures drop to -20Β°C to -30Β°C. Lake partially or fully frozen.

The most popular and well-maintained route
β Road Condition: Well-paved highway for most of the route. Chang La pass area can be slippery in rain. 4WD vehicles recommended. Shared taxis available from Leh.
The adventurous and scenic alternative route
β οΈ Adventure Route: River crossings, unpaved sections, and spectacular desert landscape. Best for experienced riders / 4WD vehicles. Incredibly rewarding for those who dare!
Your permits will be checked at multiple points. Keep them handy β both digital and printed copies.
Get your Inner Line Permit online or from DC office. Fill up fuel. Withdraw sufficient cash.
First permit check. Keep your ILP and ID ready. A small village with fuel stations and dhabas.
Second major checkpoint. Altitude sickness can affect here. Take it slow, drink water. Scenic military camps.
Another checkpoint on the Shyok route. Military zone β photography may be restricted.
The last town before Pangong Lake. Last chance to fuel up and get food. Accommodation also available here.
Final permit check at the lake entrance. Welcome to one of Earth's most magical places β you made it!

Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport, or Driving License. Carry originals.
Print at least 3 copies of ILP. Checks happen at multiple points.
Required for restricted areas including Pangong. Obtain from District Magistrate, Leh.
Indian tourist visa. PAP costs approx. βΉ400 per person per week.
Citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh & China are NOT permitted to visit Pangong area.
π¨ Important: No permit = No entry. Military personnel check permits strictly at all checkpoints. Apply for your ILP at least a day before your visit to Pangong.
Best coverage in the Pangong area. If you have a BSNL/Airtel/JIO postpaid SIM, you'll get signal for calls at most points around Pangong.
Postpaid Airtel and Jio may work at certain spots. Coverage is spotty and unreliable. Don't depend on it.
ALL prepaid SIM cards (Jio, Airtel, Vi prepaid) do NOT work in the Pangong/Leh area. Switch to postpaid before you visit.
Do not expect mobile internet at Pangong. Download offline maps (Google Maps, Maps.me), music, and content before leaving Leh.
